Hypothermia Awareness for Winter Adventurers

Cold conditions in New Zealand can change quickly during winter hikes, making it important to recognize the early signs of Hypothermia.

Hypothermia happens when the body loses heat faster that it can produce it, causing body temperatures to drop dangerously low.

Common Symptoms Can Include:

  • Intense shivering
  • Numb hands or feet
  • Slurred speech
  • Confusion or poor decision-making
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Slow breathing or feeling unusually weak

If you or someone shows signs of Hypothermia during long periods of time out in the winter elements, seek shelter, add warm dry layers or bring out an emergency blanket and warm the person gradually. Preparation is one of the best forms of protection during winter adventures.

At rungear.co.nz we encourage hikers and runners to stay prepared with proper winter apparel, waterproof layers and outdoor safety essentials before heading into changing New Zealand conditions.
